MontPIRG's interns make everything we do possible.  These hardworking students dedicate countless hours to making sure that we accomplish our goals and get things done for students and the people of Montana.  Our interns learn how to be life long leaders and citizens with the skills to make an impact on the community around them.

Taylor McPherson (Missoula)

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor McPherson and I am in my first year studying Environmental Science and Sustainability with a minor in Economics at the University of Montana. I love being outdoors and being active in the community and am super excited to be a part of MontPRIG and learn how to be a better activist!

Jack Toillion (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Jack Toillion and I am from Spokane, WA, attending the University of Montana as a sophomore studying Political Science and English! I love to read, write, boulder, and hope to ski the many mountains Missoula has to offer. I joined MontPIRG to help engage with and further the politically-engaged community , while educating myself on the local intricacies of governance here!

Anna Thomas (Missoula)

Hey!! My name is Anna Thomas and I am an Environmental Studies major/Wildlife Biology minor at University of Montana! I'm originally from Anchorage, Alaska where I began my love of nordic skiing, hiking, camping, and pretty much everything outdoorsy. I'm super excited to be part of MontPIRG and help tackle local issues that are impacting the community and environment!

Morgan (Mo) Twiford (Bozeman)

I am currently finishing up my freshman year at MSU. I was born and raised in Bozeman. I am studying Sociology in the hopes to become a Social Worker. I love to read,hike, and snowboard in my free time. I joined this internship to learn valuable skills for my career, and to help local people. 

Joe Mattson (Bozeman)

Hello! My name is Joe Mattson, I am a senior studying political science and sustainability here at Montana State University in Bozeman. I grew up in Libertyville, Illinois and spent my time playing hockey and getting outside. In my free time you can find me hiking, fishing or skiing. I'm excited to be involved with MontPrig because it will help me grow skills as a person and will allow me to give back to this beautiful community!

Zach Wakeland (Missoula)

Hey, I’m Zach Wakeland. I study Political Science and Physics while minoring in Philosophy. I have aspirations to get into political office later in life. I love working with MontPIRG because it promotes civic engagement!

Ben Williams (Missoula)

Ben Williams moved to Missoula after receiving his associate’s degree in arts and sciences from Bellevue College in 2022. Since then, he has been pursuing an undergraduate degree in History as well as a Public History Certificate at the University of Montana. Ben is passionate about civic and U.S. history as well as environmentalism. He has been working with MontPIRG as an intern since Spring 2024 and is excited to continue to work with them to fight for community rights/ representation, environmentalism, and the preservation of local history/ culture. They aim to continuously contribute to the communities they cherish and overall make the world a better place. Ben loves to read, watch movies, and get involved with various projects that they happen to stumble into.

Izabella (Bella) Roberts (Missoula)

Hey there! My name is Izabella Roberts (but go by Bella for short), and I'm currently a senior student at the University of Montana studying forensic anthropology. I grew up in Ennis, Montana, a closely knit community, which sparked my interest in getting myself involved in the general public. I enjoy reading, being in nature, and watching movies in my spare time. I'm very excited to be involved in MontPIRG to better understand our community here in Missoula and help in any way I can.

Abigail Molm (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Abigail Molm, and I'm from Laurel, Montana. I am a student at the University of Montana studying Environmental Studies. I love doing many different things on campus, such as hiking, playing in the Grizzly Marching Band, and participating in the Pep Band. I chose to intern with MontPIRG because I am passionate about protecting the environment and working on local issues, such as Smurfit-Stone. I look forward to working with MontPIRG and learning more about how I can educate others, and make a difference in my community. 

Marquart (Mar-Quit) Doty (Bozeman)

Hello! My name is Marquart (Mar-Quit) Doty. I am a senior who studies writing and political science. I'm originally from Baltimore, MD. I love to hike, bake, fry chicken, and watch the Ravens win. I can most often be found reading a dark thriller or noir novel. 

I joined MontPIRG to connect with my community, and I'm most excited to work on projects that concern voting rights and civic engagement. In my future career, I plan to use my writing skills to make it easier for the public to read, understand, and use government communications.

Logan Rauk (Bozeman)

Hello everyone! My name is Logan Rauk, and I am a senior at Montana State University. I will be graduating this summer with a degree in Environmental Studies. I was born and raised in Missoula, but I wanted to know what it was like to be a bobcat for a little bit, so I came to Bozeman. Like most people living in this beautiful state, I love all things outdoors. My interest in the MontPIRG internship stems from my desire to better understand the political frameworks in place within my community. I hope to work with and learn from the current decision-makers to help instill change. I am grateful to be a part of this community and excited to work with the incredible people at MontPIRG!

Natalya Routzahn (Bozeman)

Hi! My name is Natalya Routzahn! I am a freshman at Montana State University majoring in Architecture and minoring in Sustainability. I was born and raised in Helena, Montana and I love the Montana environment. In my spare time I love to go camping with my family, read, watch movies, listen to music, thrift, and hang out with friends. I joined the MontPIRG intern team because I do not see myself pursuing a career in political science so this is an opportunity for me to advocate for politics in Bozeman. I hope to take everything I learn in this internship to integrate into my architecture career and be aware of issues like the housing crisis. I also hope to strengthen my leadership and communication skills that I can use for the rest of my life!

Lily Jones (Bozeman)

Hi! I’m Lily Jones from Sidney Montana! I grew up in a really outdoorsy household and love anything that includes an adventure. I’m currently a freshman at Montana State University majoring in political science with the goal of one day becoming an attorney. I absolutely love to go skiing and fishing, and just spend time outdoors in this beautiful state I call home. I’m super excited to be working with MontPIRG to get more involved in my new community and learn more about the field I’m interested in pursuing. 

Hudson Pullen (Missoula)

Hi, my name is Hudson and I’m originally from Casper, Wyoming. I’m a junior here at UM studying History, Political Science, and Ethics, while also pursuing a certificate in Philosophy, Politics, & Law (PPL). Interning at MontPIRG, I’m excited to work on issues like voter registration, civic education, environmental protection, promoting ballot measures, and helping foster new generational leadership. After graduation, I’m planning to go to grad school to teach history or work in photojournalism/documentary work. In my free time, I like to see movies at the Roxy, listen to music, ride my bike around town, explore Montana’s scenery, and try to improve my photography/video skills. 

Sawyer Unruh (Missoula)

Hello! I am Sawyer Unruh, a first-year Literature and Creative Writing student. I am originally from San Diego, California but I spent a lot of time in the Montana backcountry when I was in high school and have grown an appreciation for Montana’s environment. I am passionate about literature, film, and the environment. Outside of school, I love backpacking, photographing, and of course reading. I am so excited to work with MontPIRG to help improve our community in Missoula and keep our rivers clean!

 Fall 2023 Intern Class

We try not to compare intern classes, but our Fall 2023 intern class raised the bar for all future classes. They ran door-to-door GOTV canvasses, GOTV phone banks, a massive candidate forum, and topped all of that off by running one of Missoula’s finest forums on the toxic mess out at Smurfit-Stone.

Kiara Johnson (Missoula)

Hey! My name is Kiara Johnson!! I am a freshman at the University of Montana studying Pre-Medical sciences. Some things I enjoy are art, makeup, science, and singing. I chose this internship not only because political science is my plan B, but also because I was born and raised in Missoula and I am passionate about anything that will better this beautiful community. I am excited to learn about politics in my community and also explore my interests through this internship program. I think it’s important to serve and educate your community, especially when that community raised you!! 

Calihan Waller (Bozeman)

Howdy! My name is Calihan Waller and I am a Junior at Montana State University. I am dual majoring in Political Science and Agriculture Business with a concentration in Farm and Ranch Management. I am originally from South-Western Idaho where I grew up raising livestock, riding horses, and working cattle. I am a member of the Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority and hold a strong passion for the agriculture industry. Upon my graduation from Montana State University I plan on pursuing a career in public administration and advocacy for the agriculture industry. I am so excited to serve and educate the Bozeman community, and look forward to learning more about non-partisan political work as a MontPIRG intern!

Maren Brophy (Missoula)

Hello! My name is Maren! I am from Billings, Montana and currently a sophomore at UM studying Psychology and Climate Change. I am super excited to work with MontPIRG to help the Smurfit-Stone project. It’s an important local issue that affects our lands, community, and our future. I’m absolutely fascinated with the social and environmental issues Smurfit-Stone has to tackle! In my free time I love spending time with friends, listening to music, and hiking!

Nicho Jakub (Missoula)

Hello! My name is Nicho Jakub and I am a freshman at the University of Montana. I’m currently studying environmental studies. I have lived in Missoula Montana for a large portion of my life. During my freetime I like to travel, explore, surf, play sports, hike, etc. I joined MontPIRG because I desired education on the political side of our community and the understanding of local issues that need to be solved. I think MontPirg is a great internship opportunity because it builds skills you need in the real world such as: teamwork, communication skills, and time management. I believe that every human has a set of basic rights that should not be infringed on. I plan on using this internship as an experience that will help me achieve my future career goals.

Luke Petrus (Bozeman)

Luke is a freshman studying history at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. His favorite period to study is Ancient Western History. He enjoys biking, hiking, snowboarding and fishing in his time off.

Hailey Hiller (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Hailey Hiller and I am a freshman at the University of Montana. I was born and raised here in Missoula and love calling such a beautiful place my home. I am studying Political Science and Philosophy and am pursuing a certificate in Philosophy, Politics, and Law with the hope of one day becoming a lawyer. I am so grateful for the opportunity that MontPIRG has provided me with and am so excited to make a difference in my community. I appreciate that we focus on a wide variety of things throughout our time together to make the most impact. 

Leia Schritz (Bozeman)

Hi all! My name is Leia Schritz, and I am a junior studying Geology at Montana State University in Bozeman. I grew up in Townsend, Montana and enjoy the excellent hunting and fishing in my hometown. In my free time I like to camp, hike, travel, dance, read, float the river, collect pretty rocks, soak in the many natural hot springs in Montana, go to concerts, and explore abandoned quarries. Since moving to Bozeman, I have consistently struggled with housing due to the general lack of it as well as the exorbitant prices. I joined MontPIRG because I believe that the Bozeman community deserves equal access to affordable housing. I want to help the people in our community by making them aware of current issues and showing them ways to make meaningful changes that improve the quality of life for everyone in Bozeman.

Ella Nesbitt (Missoula)

Hi! I’m Ella Nesbitt and I’m from Newport Beach, California. I’m a freshmen at UM this year and I’m studying Environmental Science and Sustainability while on a Pre-Law track. I love hiking, rock climbing, and just being involved! I’m super excited to be working with MontPIRG and get involved with more local issues, especially on the Smurfit-Stone project.

Christian Klepper (Bozeman)

My name is Christian Klepper, and I am a freshman at Montana State University studying political science. I was born in Whitefish MT and have always been interested in the U.S. legal system. I like to skiing, photography, camping, and reading. I joined MontPirg to learn more about how the system works and to get experience in the subject.

Liam Stoddard (Missoula)

Howdy there! My name is Liam Stoddard (they/them) and I'm a third-year student at the University of Montana. I'm currently pursuing degrees in psychology with a focus on women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Once I've completed this stretch of my academic journey, I plan to become licensed as an art/play psychologist. I'm ecstatic to be working with MontPIRG, for I feel it is my duty to help educate youth and other students on our state's political systems, environmental issues, and renter's rights. I love that I have been able to find community in my new home and I hope to share that with others. I am indubitably passionate about LGBT, BIPOC, disability rights and accessibility, as well as composting and recycling policies. 

Camryn Busch (Bozeman)

Hi! My name is Camryn Busch, I am an Alaska Native who loves anything involving the outdoors. In my free time I also enjoy reading, hanging out with my family and friends, snuggling dogs, as well as listening to music! One of my life long joys is commercial fishing. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the industry and for as long as I can remember my family has all come together every summer to laugh, cry, and work hard living off the land. When I am not home fishing, I am a freshman at Montana State University studying pre-med. I hope to become a dental hygienist at the end of my journey. Although my path to get there isn’t mapped out I believe Montana is where I am supposed to be. When I heard about MontPIRG I was instantly attracted to their mission. I am thrilled to intern with them and I strive to make a difference in my community and learn/advocate on/for important issues in this community. I hope to take this experience and bring it either back to Alaska or the next place I go to use my voice there as well!

Leslie Ruiz-Anaya (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Leslie Ruiz Anaya. I’m originally from North Dakota but decided to come to U of M and double major in Political Science and Sociology, with a concentration in Public Law & Political Theory. All that in hopes of becoming an Immigration Lawyer someday. I love playing volleyball, going on runs, and hanging out with family and friends. I am super excited to be a part of MontPIRG and get involved in local issues and build a community. With my time here, I hope to improve my communication skills along with becoming a better activist.

Meghan Schaeffer (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Meghan Schaeffer and I’m from Bozeman, Montana. I’m a freshman at UM this year, currently studying Anthropology with a minor in Spanish. I love hiking, climbing, swimming, and mountain biking as well as music and reading. I’m a big advocate for the outdoors and am excited to be working on the Smurfit-Stone project! With MontPIRG I hope to improve my interpersonal skills while also advocating for values that I believe in.

Ellie D’Amico (Bozeman)

Hello, my name is Ellie and I am from Missoula. I am a fourth-year student at MSU pursuing degrees in psychology and sociology with minors in political science and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. I enjoy outdoor activities, reading, and spending time with friends and family. I’m excited to work with MontPIRG for many reasons but especially advocating for environmental protection and voter participation.

Hannah Adkins (Missoula)

Hi! My name is Hannah Adkins and I’m a first-year grad student in the EVST program at UM. I’m from a small town in West Virginia and came to Montana to further my research in freshwater contamination and restoration. I joined MontPIRG to advocate for environmental issues and because of the positive impact I have seen it have on this community. I am excited to get to work alongside other interns and board members and become a better activist. 

Grace Ramey (Bozeman)

Hello! I'm Grace Ramey, currently a sophomore at Montana State University. I'm pursuing a double major in political science and English writing, and I'm on the pre-law track. Bozeman has been my home for the past six years, having moved here from Birmingham, Alabama. I love spending time outdoors and exploring the beauty of nature. Additionally, I am an active member of the Alpha Omicron Sorority on campus and am passionate about engaging in community service activities in Bozeman. I am eagerly looking forward to the chance to contribute as an intern with MONTpirg!

Lauren Brownlee (Bozeman)

My name is Lauren Brownlee and I am a senior at Montana State University studying Snow Science and Microbiology. I grew up in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and have always appreciated the outdoors which led me on my academic path here in Bozeman. I feel strongly that younger demographics of people need to get involved in politics and become well-versed in the world around them, so MontPIRG was the perfect opportunity for me to get involved and start becoming part of the change I'd like to see. 

 Spring 2023 Intern Class

This amazing team had a wild internship semester. They led legislative trainings to teach their peers how to testify at the 2023 State Legislature, they pushed our elected leaders to uphold the great strengths of the Montana Constitution, and they began our community campaign to clean up the defunct Smurfit-Stone paper mill. We are so excited to see where they take all the skills they developed.

Madison Rascoe (Bozeman)

Hello, my name is Madison Rascoe, I am originally from Burlington, North Dakota! I am a sophomore double-majoring in Criminology and Political Science. My plan is to attend law school after I graduate from Montana State University. In my free time, I work at the SUB Rec Center on campus, golf when the weather allows, and enjoy reading. I am excited to be able to intern with MontPIRG as I want to advocate for issues I care about and teach others about the problems within the community that need to be addressed. 

Taryn Van Steeland (Bozeman)

Hey! My name is Taryn Van Steeland, and I am a senior here at MSU studying Political Science with a double minor in History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I currently work for MSU’s family and graduate housing, I serve as an ASMSU Senator to the College of Letters and Sciences, I am the media and marketing manager for the Political Science Society, and I’m a cohost for a podcast funded through the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. After graduating this fall, I will attend law school and hopefully pursue a career that advances and protects the civil and political rights of marginalized communities. I am so stoked about working with MontPIRG because I believe that everyone’s voice matters in the democratic practice, and I want to support Montana youth in making their voices heard.

Hi! My name is Maddie French, and I’m a senior studying political science and anthropology. I’m from Butte, MT, which is where my love of community involvement started. I’m with MontPIRG because I’m passionate about making sure as many people are empowered to vote as possible, especially young people. In my free time, you can catch me listening to audiobooks, hanging with my cat Babylon, or cooking.

Aurorra Dominguez (Bozeman)

My name is Aurorra Dominguez and I am a senior at Montana State University studying Community Health and Human Development. I was raised in Wyoming and Montana and have always had a passion for the outdoors. I am excited for my journey with MontPIRG and advocate for issues like the housing crisis, voters rights, and sustainability. This internship will help me learn more about policy and how to become an active member of our community. 

Jazmin Lerman (Bozeman)

Hi! My name is Jazmin Lerman. I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina but I absolutely love living in Bozeman. I crossed the world to follow my two passions; school and tennis. I am a student at Montana State University and part of the Women's Tennis Team. I am a junior pursuing a major in Environmental Studies, a minor in Sustainability Studies, and hoping to become an environmental lawyer in the future. I am so proud to be a part of MontPIRG because I strongly believe in this organization's values and I want to help create good in the community!

Madalyn Gabel (Missoula)

Hi there! My name is Madalyn Gabel, I am studying Geography with a certificate in Geographic Information Systems, and Pre-law. I’m originally from Lafayette Colorado and grew up ranching. Montana drew me in with its beautiful wilderness along with all the unique learning opportunities offered at the University of Montana. I joined MontPIRG because it has such a positive impact on communities across Montana and allows for the non-biased sharing of ideas. I am particularly passionate about education accessibility, social equitability, and land use.

Nathan Gracey (Bozeman)

Hello, my name is Nathan Gracey and I am a senior at Montana State University majoring in environmental studies. I am from Alpine Meadows, California. Growing up in the Sierra Nevada mountains skiing, biking, climbing and hiking right outside my backdoor gave me a strong passion and love for outdoor environments and public lands. Going to school in Montana gave me a better awareness of the environmental issues concerning all the places so many people and myself love to recreate in. Montpirg is a great opportunity to help me apply everything I've learned through school to participate in legislation in a local and state-wide scope. 

Cassidy Alber (Bozeman)

Hi, my name is Cassidy Alber. I am from Victor, MT, and a sophomore at MSU studying Political Science. I joined MontPIRG because I am passionate about protecting the environment and civic engagement. In my free time I enjoy white water rafting, skiing, and reading.

Annabel Boedeker (Missoula)

Hey, I'm Annabel (she/her). I love hiking in the mountains, which never fails to amaze me as a Midwesterner from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I appreciate listening to music, learning about philosophy and everything else that changes my perception of the world. I joined MontPIRG to empower young voters to make their voices heard and to learn how I’m capable of making an impact. 

Keelin Monaghan (Bozeman)

Hello! My name is Keelin Monaghan and I am a 7th generation Bozemanite. I am a Psychology major with a minor in Philosophy. I’m seeking to pursue a PhD in Psychology. I was involved in a First-generation college student program for students with diverse backgrounds at my last college, Mills College, where we spoke to local legislators about issues impacting the Bay Area such as homelessness, access to public transit, and clean policies like recycling and composting. I am very interested in expanding public transportation to outer areas like Belgrade and Manhattan to Bozeman. I look forward to participating in MontPIRG’s connection with the local community. 

Jennea Attai (Bozeman)

My name is Jennea Attai. I am a senior at MSU Bozeman majoring in Community Health. I grew up in rural Northern California in Lake County. I look forward to being able to work in tribal health in my career, and working to connect communities by advocating for renters right and housing affordability. Working with MontPIRG is a unique opportunity to be able to dive in and get hands-on experience in these areas and I am happy to be along for the ride!

Ella Bradley (Missoula)

This is my second semester at UM and I am studying Environmental Studies with a minor in German. I plan to go to law school and have a career in environmental law or lobbyism in the future. I am from Vermont and came to Montana because I have friends and family here, I love the mountains, and it is a great place to learn about environmental conservation. Civic advocacy is important to me and I am excited to work with MontPIRG and gain skills and knowledge about Montana politics and government!

Makayla Smith (Bozeman)

My name is Makayla, and I’m a sophomore at Montana State studying Political Science, with a minor in Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship. The two issues I’m most passionate about are Climate Justice and Queer Rights. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, embroidery and knitting, and reading. I grew up in Montana, and I’m excited to work with MontPIRG on protecting the natural beauty of this place.

Buddy Wilson (Missoula)

Hey! I'm Buddy and I'm a first-year student from North Carolina. I'm studying Environmental and Political Sciences, and I'm interested in environmental policy. I love to read, watch movies, ski, and hike. I'm excited to be working with MontPIRG to help students advocate for themselves and make a difference in their community.

Kendall Ryan (Bozeman)

I am a junior at Montana State University studying Political Science and Sociology. I am from Ewa Beach, HI and I play on the MSU Women's Rugby Team. I am interested in protecting voter rights and public lands and MontPIRG will give me the opportunity to work with others who are passionate about the same topics as me!

Runyon Matthews (Missoula)

Hey, I’m Runyon Matthews, a freshman at the University of Montana, where I’m pursuing a degree in English Education. I’m very excited to intern for MontPIRG because advocating for local issues is something that I’m very passionate about. When I’m not busy, I love to read, walk by the river, play bass and listen to music. 

 Fall 2022 Intern Class

Our Fall 2023 intern class ran candidate forums, turned out voters for the Federal election, planned fundraisers, and pushed our senators to pass the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act. On top of that, they then updated our Tenant Landlord Guide to keep it up to date with Montana’s changing codes.


Madelyn Carlson (Bozeman)

Hello! My name is Madelyn Carlson and I'm a junior here at MSU. I am majoring in sociology and minoring in anthropology. I love reading, writing and spending time with my family here in Bozeman. I am excited for the opportunity to work with MontPIRG, and hope to connect more with the local community through this internship. I am especially passionate about protecting our public land and ensuring Montana stays both beautiful and accessible.

Makena Howard (Missoula)

Hello my name is Makena Howard, I am currently a senior and an RA for Jesse Hall. My two majors are Political Science (International Relations), and German. I grew up in Denver, Colorado. In my free time I enjoy skiing, watching hockey (go avs!!), and skating. I look forward to civic engagement with MontPIRG for causes I’m passionate about. In the future I would like to be a lawyer, in the international law field. I have previously interned for the UM IDS department, and Montana World Affairs Council as well..

Colton Martello (Bozeman)

I am Colton Martello. I'm from Great Falls Montana, I went to CMR. What drives me is the interaction between two individuals that betters both. I love talking and interacting with people because the sharing of ideas and concepts will better everyone. Another thing I like to do is hunt, fish and bike and enjoy our beautiful state. I came to Bozeman to experience a growing hub of people.

Mackay Johnson (Bozeman)

Hi! My name is Mackay Johnson and I'm a senior studying political science at Montana State University. I love to hike, bike, and ski with my friends. I'm from Seattle, WA where I grew up spending a ton of my time in the outdoors. I'm super passionate about climate change and environmental advocacy and am planning to go into that line of work once I graduate! MontPIRG has been a great way for me to start to learn about the inner workings of nonprofits and has further influenced me to go into advocacy work.

Marquayvion Hughes (Bozeman)

Marquayvion Hughes is a fourth-year student from Davenport, IA studying Political Science hoping eventually obtain A PhD in Political Science with a focus in Political Theory. He worked as a Diversity ambassador for 3 years, becoming the senior diversity ambassador at the end of spring 2022. Georgia Balius (Missoula)

Hello! My name is Georgia Balius, I am a sophomore honors student at the University of Montana studying political science, philosophy, and computer science. I joined MontPIRG because I am passionate about Missoula and Montana as a whole and I love the issues MontPIRG is involved in. Hello, my name is Giselle Mendoza. I am a senior studying Psychology and Business Management at Montana State University and the Gallatin College. I plan to go to law school where I ultimately plan to protect the legal rights of those facing injustices of the law. I am excited to have the opportunity to intern at MontPIRG to make a difference by advocating for the state and local issues within our state!

Cole Shultz (Bozeman)

My name is Cole Shultz, and I’m a junior here in the Honors College pursuing a major in Human Geography and a minor in Statistics. I’m originally from Bellevue, Washington, and when I’m not in class I enjoy being active, finding peace hiking up mountains, swimming in lakes, and biking on country roads. I am excited to work with MontPIRG on issues relating to housing affordability and sustainable public transit. Go Cats!

Brandon Smith (Missoula)

Hey! I’m Brandon Smith, I’m a 2nd-year student here at the UM, and I’m studying Political Science and History. I like to cook and play the bass, and usually you’ll find me strolling around campus or studying down in the journalism building (it really has the nicest studying rooms!). I’m super excited to continue working with MontPIRG as an intern, I love what the organization stands for and I’m ready to get more people excited about civics and passionate about voting. 

Lisa Venekus (Missoula)

This is my first semester at UM and I am studying Sociology with a concentration in inequality and social justice. I am from Indiana and came to montana to get outdoors and be near the mountains. It has always been important to me to advocate for what I believe in so as not to be complacent, and encourage others to do the same; I am really excited to have the opportunity to do this in Montana and gain skills that will help me be an active member of society in the future.

Alex Johnson (Bozeman)

Hi, my name is Alex Johnson and I am a freshman studying Financial Engineering at MSU. I want to pursue a career in politics so that I might be able to fix some of the problems we face today. I grew up in Great Falls, Montana (Go Rustlers!), and have lived in Montana my whole life. I’m with MontPirg to learn how political organizations work, what sort of work they do, and build relationships so that I may pursue a career in politics. I am excited to get to work so that we can help make Montana that much better.

Ashlie Jean Tano (Bozeman)

My name is Ashlie Jean, and yes my last name is like the Star Wars character! I come from sunny San Diego and am back for my second year at Montana State University. I’m a lifelong learner whose fidelity is towards the arts - and this translates to my major Integrated Lens-Based Media. I am genuinely passionate about social, political, and environmental justice which I talk about in my podcast, VladRevamped. I am so excited to intern with MontPIRG this semester and give back to my community.

Hello! My name is Liam, and I am a first year student from Chinook, MT. Here at the University of Montana, I am studying Economics with a minor in Political Science. I enjoy the outdoors and just genuinely getting to know people and networking. Currently an elementary education major, I hope to one day teach in a school right here in Bozeman. Some of my favorite things to do are go skiing and snowboarding and of course spend time with family and friends; however, I think the best things in life happen unexpectedly, so I am always up for any adventure. I personally joined MontPIRG because it is so important to give voices to students and other people in our community and allow them to bring change into our lives with open minds and hearts.

As a senior in the University of Montana Environmental Studies program I am excited to expand my involvement in the Missoula community, a community which has facilitated so much personal growth for me over the past few years. My time at UM has also driven my interest in issues such as environmental and food justice, sustainable agriculture practices, and climate change. I moved to Montana nearly a decade ago to pursue my teaching degree in the beautiful mountains of the Gallatin Valley; or, as I put it at the time, to go read books somewhere pretty. Since then, I’ve worked in a wood shop and a toy shop, a bar and a school newspaper, and a little bit of everything else. I dropped out of school after a few years the first time, finding myself unable to justify the debt I was accruing for a through-line I couldn’t see. Now, after some growth and a great many changes, I’m back in school pursuing a teaching degree, again, but with much more ambition and confidence.

Being passionate about voters and renters rights, I joined MontPIRG to help educate others on what is currently happening in our State Legislature. I have seen first hand what happens when people are uneducated in elections and things going on in our capital and think organizations like this are crucial in making sure everyone's voices are heard! When I am not helping advocate for more fair elections and more rights to all, you can usually find me hanging out with friends/family or exploring somewhere new in Bozeman.

I am a senior here at Montana State University, originally from Maryland, studying Conservation Biology Ecology. I wanted to get involved with MontPIRG as a way of getting involved on campus and the community of Bozeman, which I have called home for a little over 3 years. As a conservation major and an avid hiker and camper, I am extremely passionate about doing my part to help protect there amazing public lands that surround us here in the beautiful state of Montana. In addition to hiking and camping, I love to challenge myself with new experiences, cook, and travel.

I grew up in NYC and have lived in Missoula since 2013. I originally moved here for school but took a few years off to solidify what I wanted to do. I'm now back at the University of Montana to get a degree in Sociology. I have spent the last five summers fighting wildland fire, the last three winters selling christmas trees back home in NYC. I now spend the shoulder seasons studying for class but when I have free time I am running, mountain biking, hiking, exercising or playing board games.

I am interning with MontPIRG because I passionately believe in voter rights and the power of the people to enact positive societal change through civic engagement.

Elise Striebel (Bozeman)

Elise is a senior at Montana State University. She is majoring in SETS, a multidisciplinary history major with a specialization in environmental history, and minoring in sustainability. Elise was born in Montana's Bitterroot Valley, where she graduated from Hamilton High School in 2017, after attending Union College for one year, she decided to travel, and then returned back to Montana to finish university. Growing up surrounded by natural beauty, she obtained a drive for environmental conservation. Additionally, her family was passionate about political action and social justice and instilled it in her from a young age. Elise is looking forward to working with MontPIRG and learning about the ways to incite meaningful change in Montana through political, grassroots, and non-profit organizing .
