MontPIRG's Amazing Interns

MontPIRG's interns make everything we do possible.  These hardworking students dedicate countless hours to making sure that we accomplish our goals and get things done for students and the people of Montana.  Our interns learn how to be life long citizens with the skills to make an impact on the community around them.

If you are interested in being an intern and earning 3 upper division credits this spring or summer you can contact Katy Westhoff at 406-243-2908 or by e-mail katy@mtpirg.org.

Libbey Gallagher-Barsness I’m a recent graduate from the University of Montana with a degree in History. I got involved with MontPIRG this past summer working as a canvasser and loved it so much I decided to stick with it! If you gave me a choice between a lifetime supply of burritos and a million dollars I’d probably choose the burritos.

Grace Long Grace is a recent import to the UM, and is originally from too many places. She's a Poli Sci and Creative Writing major with a passion for getting angry at current events, and MontPIRG has proven to be the perfect place to do that constructively. In her free time she likes reading about the supernatural, talking about how gay she is, and listening to bad music.

Chase Baker I am currently pursuing a Marketing degree at U of M. I'm a junior with high aspirations of graduating in Spring of 18'. I am originally from Georgia but my passion for hunting and fishing has brought me out here to Montana. If I am not in class or at my job at Doc's Sandwich shop than you can usually find me walking around the Bob Marshall wilderness or fly fishing on the Clark Fork. I am very passionate about conservation and preserving our natural resources for the generations to come. I'm very excited about my internship at MontPIRG because I'm excited to learn how to have a bigger impact on the negative bills that impact wildlife conservation and how to reach out and have my voice heard.

Kelly Williamson Hello, I’m Kelly Williamson and I am a non-traditional transfer student from Northern California. I have my Associates of Science degree in Administration of Justice, and I am here at UM to obtain my BA degree in Environmental Studies, and to go on to study Environmental Law. My Father was from Montana and always told me what a special place it is. So I have moved here to find out for myself.  I am a mother and grandmother who has seen this country go through many changes. I believe that you cannot bring about effective change without changing the laws, and to do that you need to know what people care about, and what is happening in the political realm. I have become a member of MontPIRG to obtain better knowledge of the current laws, and to gain knowledge as to what Montana voters feel is most important. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and working to improve our environment through volunteer work, and political advocacy.

Keith Leathers Hello, my name is Keith Leathers, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to be a member of the Spring 2017 MontPIRG intern team! I am currently a sophomore studying Geography. I chose to pursue a degree in Geography because I have always had an intense fascination for maps and exploring places around the globe through them. Some of my favorite activities to do in my free time are exploring different hiking trails, cross country skiing, playing board games with a group of friends, or just relaxing with a book, movie, or video game.

Geoff Hoefer I'm a new intern at MontPirg. He recently transferred to the University of Montana after an academic hiatus spent working on our nation's public lands. Geoff is stoked to learn about what makes Montana work from a political and an ecological perspective. If he's not on campus studying or working, you can find Geoff on his bicycle riding through town or in the woods hiking.

Sylvia Borstad Hey girl heyy. I'm a sophomore at UM, I took a year off to have my beautiful, now one year old, baby boy! I tried Business Management for a while, but have officially switched to double majoring in Political Science and Voice Area at the Music School. I am the type to bring home like 50 cats and dogs if I could, possibly pigs too, aka animal lover. I want to become more of an environmentalist and also motivate people to get involved in politics and societal/public events that affect everyone. I was born in raised in the Flathead Valley, mostly Kalispell, but also lived in Great Falls before moving to Missoula (Zoola is by far the best). I've coached a few acro sports, was in all-star cheerleading for nearly a decade, and love to do anything outdoors, as long as I don't have to touch worms or snakes! It is my first semester interning with MontPIRG, sooo let's just hope I get a clue about being nonpartisan. Good day!
